Talking Pools Podcast
If you’ve ever stared at a test kit like it personally insulted your family… welcome home.
Talking Pools Podcast is the pool industry’s “pull up a chair” show—part shop talk, part field manual, part therapy session—built for people who actually live on pool decks: commercial operators, service techs, builders, facility managers, and anyone responsible for water that can’t afford to go sideways. The network was created to level up the pool industry with real-world conversations on water chemistry, filtration, troubleshooting, construction, safety, and the business side of keeping pools open and budgets intact.
Here’s the hook: it’s not theory-first. It’s experience-first—a roster of seasoned pros (with 250+ years of combined “been there, fixed that” wisdom) turning complicated problems into practical moves you can use the same day. And it’s not one voice, one vibe, one corner of the industry: it’s a network of shows designed to reflect how diverse this work really is—different regions, different specialties, different personalities.
Also worth saying out loud: women aren’t “special guests” here—they’re on the mic as hosts, from the beginning, with an intentionally balanced roster. That matters, because the best ideas in this industry don’t come from one lane—they come from the whole road.
If you want a podcast that can make you laugh and make you better at what you do—without pretending the job is easier than it is—Talking Pools is the one you queue up before the first stop, and keep on when the day starts getting weird.

Redo, redo, alert. Okay, anyway, that's we started again. Welcome everyone. This is the Talking Pools show. It's particularly Andrea and Paulette talking pool stuff. How come you're your um our cam my camera's flipped because my shirt's backwards and yours?
SPEAKER_06Uh no, mine's backwards and yours is not in my view.
SPEAKER_03Okay, well never mind. I'm don't know how cameras work apparently. So yeah, anyway. Talking pools, Andrea Paulette here with you. Thank you for joining us. So how's it going? What's up?
SPEAKER_06All right. What happened? What happened this week? Uh, let's see. This weekend, I planted a whole bunch of pollinating plants. Pol plants to attract pollinators. So I'm gonna get hummingbirds.
SPEAKER_03Pollinating plants, and I was like, you're a whore pool.
SPEAKER_06Not by my pool. No, no, no, no. On the front of my house.
SPEAKER_03Well, you know, you know, pollen um gets blown by the wind.
SPEAKER_06That's kind of the Well, these are just little plants that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. So I have a little a whole all around down my front walkway is gonna be pollinators. And I've already gotten bees and butterflies. I'm just waiting for the hummingbirds to come. Which I had hummingbirds last year, so I know that they will come. So that's what I did all weekend. What'd you do?
SPEAKER_03So what did I do this weekend? I did literally nothing on Sunday. I just sometimes that's all good. I did nothing. All I wanted to do I literally laid in my bed all day. Yeah, nothing wrong with that. And walked around. I ate some food, and that was it. We do I do, I don't think we talked about the kittens last week because this just happened and we had pre-recorded. Yeah, so uh this mommy cat showed up in my backyard, and at first I thought there were three, but there's four kittens in total, and now today I think the daddy cat is hanging around in my front yard. I kind of thought that I kind of thought that cats don't really do that, but you know my story. Yeah. I was just gonna say, you told me your story with the uh with the father cat that was whatever, so I was like, hmm, is this because one of the cats is one of the kittens is black and white, and the mom is white, but she's got patches of tiger stripe on her, so I don't know if that makes her calico. Maybe maybe because she's like she's got like it's like right on her back is a patch, and it's like just like the tiger-striped little kittens, and then there's three kittens that are all just tigers, tiger stripies, and then there's one kitten that is black and white, and his and I don't know their genders because I haven't been able to get close to them, but um the little face is black and white, and they're so cute, and I can't get to them because of where they are in my yard. Well, you just gotta keep feeding them and they will keep coming. So I've been feeding the mom, and today when I got home, the mom saw me, I went out on the patio and she came running out to me. Yeah, so and then yeah, and then I was trying to walk away to go take a shower, and she was following me and trying to trip me and keep me petting her and stuff. So, and then Audriella, my daughter, said that she was able to see all of the kittens, like they all came out of the bushes where they are, um, but she couldn't get close enough. She was she got she got close enough to pet one of them, which I think is the same one that I was able to pet, because there's one of them that hangs out with the mom and doesn't want to hang out with the other three, and the other three play and chase each other around and jump on each other and play with the bushes and try to because I can see them through my window, I just can't get to them. And then there's just one that sits there by himself or herself. I assume it's a boy, and um just watches the other one, but he follows the mom anywhere she goes. Oh, that's so cute. I really need to like get them and make sure that they're healthy.
SPEAKER_06Yes. My uh what happened with mine, I'll make this really quick, was uh the male cat started coming around. I started feeding him, and then he brought this little male kitten, tiny little kitten, brought this little tiny kitten around, and then then they brought another female kitten. Um, but she was gray, so those two are black, all black, and then there the female was gray. So I've just been feeding all three of them, and then I snatched up the little kitten, and now he lives inside my home. Yeah, I've had him for a year or two years. I think I don't know, he's two years old, so I've had him for at least a year in my house.
SPEAKER_03And I think these are like two months because they're still nursing.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, this one wasn't nursing, but when he first came around, he was.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they're well, they're all still nursing, and but I've left food out, so I left dry food out and I saw the kittens eating the dry food. Yeah, okay, that's good.
SPEAKER_06So yeah, and I still feed I feed the male cat and the gray cat, the female cat. Um, I've been feeding them for like forever. And they come every morning and every night, they'll like sleep. I put a little cat house outside of my carport, they'll sleep in there sometimes. They're always getting something like that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So yeah, anyway, kittens. That's it. So cute. Four of them. Yep. And yeah, I don't know. I think maybe the black one that I said that I saw today, I think that one is the dad, but I can't I don't know. I can't get close enough to them. So um, anyway, all right. You want to start this uh algae?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so we're talking about algae. This is part two, and now we're gonna be talking about algae sides.
SPEAKER_03And kind and and you know, we'll talk about how to uh our preferred methods of eradicating it.

SPEAKER_03So we are going to talk about how to remove the algae that we talked about last week. I think so. Hold on. Okay. Okay. All right. Are you ready? Geez, I read it already. We did.
SPEAKER_06Okay, let's go. Okay. So we're talking about algae and algae sides and what our preferred methods are. Correct.
SPEAKER_03That's what we are going to talk about today. Last week we talked about um excuse me. Last week we talked a little bit about what algae actually is, where it comes from. And I just want to say real quick that I'm pretty sure I said this in last week's episode, but all of this information is coming from either the CPO book or from Rudy's algae book. This isn't just like stuff that I'm making up or that I got randomly for from the internet from um Joey Joey what was it? What what did he say? Uh Joey cream cheese. Right.
SPEAKER_06So um I also am gonna quote a source from a chemical company that did a class. How dare you at one of the pool shows. Which one? It was in Orlando. Which class? Oh, uh I don't remember. Which company? I'll tell you later. I don't know. Anyways, let's go. Let's get on with this thing. Start again.
SPEAKER_03We should just code start completely. 324. Anyway. So here we go. Ready? Yeah. Yes. Now. As we said last week, the ex with the exception of white water mold and pink slime, because those are yucky parasitic uh bacterias. Um, so with the with with the exception of those, it's not necessarily the algae itself that is harmful to swimmers, but you know, if algae's growing, then what else is living in the water? You know, then you can have all those other things. Also in the CPO book, which I think is kind of funny, it says that algae can be a s and I don't mean to be like, oh, it's funny, because I guess it is a real safety issue, but you can slip on it and it says that you can um slip into the deep end and then not be able to swim. Um, so it could potentially be harmful in that way. If algae's growing, other bacteria can grow. Algae can be slippery, you can fall and hurt your head, and also slip into the deep end and possibly uh be a drowning hazard. So that is no joke, no joking matter. So I have a question for you. All right, I have an answer. Let's see if they match. Let's see if you can guess what my favorite alga side to use is. Not shock. I know it's not shock.
SPEAKER_06Well, you have to be specific. What shock are you talking about? You like to use like do you want me to say a specific brand name? No. Well, if I mean you can guess a brand name. I don't care. I think that you you like to use the stuff that you pour, the powder that you pour into a cap, and then you put it in the pool and you pour the chlorine over the top of it, and it turns yellow-ish.
SPEAKER_03You're talking about sodium bromide.
SPEAKER_06Yes, that's what you like to use.
SPEAKER_03That is incorrect. Nope. If this was a dunk tank, you would be in the water, ma'am. Um, no, my favorite thing to use is trichlor, which is chlorine. I should have known. I also like to just length. Right. I also like to use just straight liquid chlorine. Extra and and acid also, too, depending on what I'm trying to do. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_06So that's what I was gonna say was that in the chemical class that I went to in Orlando, they said if you have a pH, if you keep it low on the lower end, um, that you will algae cannot grow if the pH is low. Obviously, you can't keep it, you know, too low, but right, and that's true.
SPEAKER_03So if you keep the al if you keep the um the algae, if you if you keep the algae on the low side, if you keep the pH on the lower side, the algae will have uh less stuff to for what it needs to grow. And I say that in a general way. I obviously we just spent a whole bunch of time talking about what algae needs to grow last week, so don't come at me for that. Anyway, um, but yeah, so also a higher pH, as we know, um makes the chlorine less effective. There's a whole scale. Oh, my phone just fell off. Okay. There's a whole scale. Um, there's a whole thing for that. There's percentages and stuff like that. So you can find that chart easily in the CPO book. You could also Google that. Um, but yeah, so you have more hypochlorous acid available to sanitize and oxidize when the pH is low. When the pH is high, it's not as readily available. It's there's bonds and there's carbonates and stuff like that. Carbonates? Oh, I don't know if I said whatever. It was move on. Um, so my like I said, my favorite, my favorite algecide is chlorine.
SPEAKER_06And too, I prefer that too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I mean, and and there's and this is why I want to talk about this because there are different um uses for all of the different algicides, and maybe somebody is not available or you're not able to use trichlor, right? So maybe you have a high stabilizer level already and you don't want to add more. Maybe you have a low pH already and you don't want to drop it lower because trichlor does drop the pH and the alkalinity as well. So that's why I want to just go over these algecides really quick.
SPEAKER_06And also, a different algacides kill different algae. They do. There's one effect Uh-huh. I just read this in the CPL book. Not that they kill different ones, but they kill the same thing.
SPEAKER_03They'll all you can use any algae, so it just depends on the algae. Right. Um, but so the stubborn, the more stubborn so like for example, for the more stubborn mustard algae, liquid chlorine is not going to work. And for the more stubborn algae, sodium bromide is not going to work. There's things that are marketed towards the different types of algae. So, like, for example, there's yellow treat, there's yellow stop, there's yellow this, yellow that, there's also green to clean, right? I actually have it right here. It's sitting here next to me. There's this. Uh-huh. Right. So this the ingredient of this, so there's another chemical by the same brand. It looks exactly like this, but instead of green to clean, it's called uh yellow stop, is it what is it called? Yellow, stop yellow, yellow out, yellow out, yellow to- I don't know. It's one something with yellow, it's the exact same ingredient. So my and this is why I wanted to talk about this because this, what the stuff in this bottle and or jar, whatever this is, and also the one with the different label are the same chemical. So, like, if you have green algae, you could definitely buy the yellow one still and and use that to kill the green algae. You could use this green to clean to kill mustard algae, depending on if it's one of those real super sticky, stubborn species of it.
SPEAKER_06Um the reason why I said that, because I was thinking of copper algacides, which in the CPO book on page 84, it says copper algacides have excellent performance on almost all algae types. So that's why.
SPEAKER_03I'm just gonna get to that in a couple paragraphs here. Okay. Um, right. So copper algacide can pretty much kill any type of algae. So let me go back to the beginning of where I was. So a very high dose of any type of chlorine combined with a dose combined with a dose of acid large enough to get the pH to 7.2. So we were talking about the relationship there, but you still need to maintain the correct alkalinity. Um, this is the a super effective and efficient algae. That's why I'm saying it's my favorite. And back to what I was saying a second ago, sodium hypochlorite would not be good for treating black algae or the more stubborn types of mustard algae. And you could use calhypo. Um, calhypo works totally fine. Uh, however, it has a higher pH and a lower chlorine content than trichlor. So if you had, and also it's unstabilized. So if you had a whole bunch of stabilizer in your pool, my my sentence came out weird. If you had a high stabilizer level, you could use calhypo and you would put it directly on black algae spots, you would put it directly on the mustard algae, and it should be sufficient to get rid of it. I've also done this in with my personal experience. This is not just me reading a book. I am telling you that you can use all of those things to kill all of those types of algae. Obviously, not liquid chlorine won't do anything for black algae. Um, okay, so it says in this water that co uh copper is the most effective on black algae.
SPEAKER_06Says it in this book.
SPEAKER_03Yes, right. I understand that. So uh copper is so we are on the second bullet point, and copper is the is the next two down. Okay. I like copper. Copper algecide is the is two bullets points down from where we are now. So pool water almost always contains the nutrients algae need. Um most types of algae are sold under many different brands, many different labels, which is what I just talked about. I always was told, honestly, and I I was always told that like algae's always in the water. And it's not necessarily that the algae is always in the water, it's there's always the nutrients that it needs to grow. And so if it gets in the water and it has the correct situation, it will bloom. Um, so let's start with quaternary and polyquat algecides. Quaternary ammonium algecides have chemical names, like, and here's where I was gonna do, I was actually gonna have this read. Oh, look, I can do it. Alkyl, dimethyl, benzyl, ammonium chloride, or dimethyldideyl ammonium chloride. Let's see how good I did. Hold on. Is it gonna do it? It's not reading it out loud. Never mind. Alright, we'll skip that. I think you did a good job. Thank you. So I practiced it when I wrote this outline. So the biggest disadvantage. Oh my god. Who's in the kitchen? I know what the biggest disadvantage is.
SPEAKER_06They can foam. And that's the most the that's the most one. They can foam. So it's agitated.
SPEAKER_03They can cause foaming. I had to stop talking because someone was in my kitchen. Oh, my roommates. Um this is most prevalent when the product is overdosed, so it is best to not use it in spas or fountains. And these types of algecides do not contain metals and have not been known to contribute to staining. Right. This is also what people are referring to if you've ever been in the Facebook groups and people go, Why is my pool foaming up? And then every single comment is cheap algebra, it's cheap algecide, it's cheap algecide. This is what they're talking about. Even though I don't think that it's cheap, I think it's just, I don't know. I don't know if it's cheap. I've never bought it.
SPEAKER_06Uh like, okay, go ahead. I don't know if we don't want to use it always.
SPEAKER_03I don't okay. I don't know the brands. Yeah, I don't know the brands of those. I don't I've never used the quaternary ammonium types. Then we have the poly polymeric quaternary ammonium algecides, which are a special type of quaternary algecides, and these are called polyquats. And I have used polyquats and I do like them. Have you ever used a polyquats? This will be a brand name.
SPEAKER_06I don't know.
SPEAKER_03This will be called a 60 day algecide. Oh, okay. Yes, I have. So the chemical name of Polyquats is complicated and is listed on the product as are you ready for this?
SPEAKER_06Wait, I want to say it.
SPEAKER_03Can you say it?
SPEAKER_06Let me see. Is it in my book here? Oh, it is. Listed as polyoxyethylene. Dimethyl. Dimethyl. Dimethyo. Ethylene. Dimethylimio. Ethylene dichloride.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you did it. So again, with same thing with the ones above. Polyquats do not contain metals and do not contain surface staining, but polyquats do not cause foaming, unlike the quaternary algacides. Right. So, yes. Uh, I have you I like the polyquats. Uh that they work very well on mustard algae. It is a thick, syrupy, stinky liquid.
SPEAKER_06And that's the same day algae side. It's brown. I've only used them back in the day when I worked for another pool company and I didn't.
SPEAKER_03Are you sure it was polyquats and not the the first thing we talked about? Quaternary ones? Well, it was a 60-day I don't know, maybe. Yeah, so the the polyquats are usually called the 60-day algae sides. It's the thick stuff that you pour in. And you like the polymer. Yeah. The polymer contains a positive electrical charge that is attracted to the negative electrical charge of algae. So it's like a magnet for algae, basically.
SPEAKER_05Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03Um, and then I imagine it goes into the algae. Well, I it goes into the filter. I was gonna say I imagine it was a wrong thing to say because it's I've used it, but it's been a very long time, and so I was just trying to recall from memory. I don't remember anything falling out really or like dead algae. So I think it just kind of goes into the filter.
SPEAKER_07Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, it does work, it does work very it does work very well on uh mustard algae. I was talking about last week when I had a stain uh in quotes, a stain that I thought was rust, but it was algae, uh mustard algae, and I used I used polyquats to get rid of it. Okay because it's not as expensive as copper, and supposedly it does last 60 days in the pool. So copper is next. Copper. I've been listening to this uh podcast and it's like set well uh it's like a time travel thing, so it was set in 2025, and they go back in time to like the Jack the Ripper time, and they're like, Oh, coppas, the coppas are coming. And it I know my accent was terrible just now. I wasn't trying very hard, but now that's in my head, like, oh the coppers, oh no, gotta run. Um, but anyway, so we talked about this in our episode about metals, and then this part of the information comes a lot, a lot of it comes from Rudy's book. So copper is is very effective, and the reason that it is effective is because it lyses the cell map cell membrane of the algae. So lysing means it ruptures, it breaks it open, and the guts come spilling out. Right. And then you get uh if you combine it with the silver, as we talked about, the copper breaks open my dog. The not she doesn't break open the dog, the copper breaks open the algae, it breaks open the cell membrane, the silver gets in there and uh uh silverizes the the inside of it. That's not scientific. Um, anyway, so copper can be sold in liquid and solid forms. I've never seen solid.
SPEAKER_06Which one what is it?
SPEAKER_03Well, so yeah, it's a powder and it's like bluish. So I I was just I was gonna say uh at the end uh in my outline here, the next small point. A lot of people will buy it from landscapers, or not landscapers, but like landscaping stores, and you can just buy copper copper sulfate in a bag, but that's not key lated. So the so like for example, Blu-ray, Blu-ray and the other one, Pool R X, those are all triple key or Blu-rays triple key lated. I'm not real sure about I don't know enough about Pool R X because Blu-rays are sponsored. Oh Blu-rays are sponsored too. I've used both. I have yeah, I mean, so anyway, but those are chelated, and also with the with those two things we just talked about, they also use uh silver and zinc in addition to the copper. And then I don't with pool RX do you pour minerals in or does the minerals already come in it? Because with Blu-ray, you put the copper tube in and then you pour the mineral packet in the around it.
SPEAKER_06The blue the other one, uh pool RX. You just put the thing in the You just put it in there. Put it in the skimmer basket, but and then you replace it like whenever you need to replace it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, same thing with Blu-ray, you have to recharge is what they the terminology they use.
SPEAKER_06So anyway, yeah. I want to talk about copper because I will tell you about the power. We're still talking about I have a pool that I've had forever. I do. Every large pool, probably 30,000 gallons, I would say. 30,000, yeah. Um so this pool every like April, it would get algae in it. I'm not kidding, for years. I knew it was gonna happen. So um one year, this pat like, I don't know, this past year, I could not get rid of it. No matter what I did. I would do the whole thing. I would go put 10 jugs of chlorine in there. I would use the, you know, the yellow stuff. I would use whatever. Never could get this freaking algae to come out of this pool. I did everything that I was supposed to be doing. Never got this algae of the pool. I met this guy at the Key West Pool show. He gave me a bunch of his chemicals. Love a cool Key West Pool show. He gave me a bunch of chemicals, and I was like, you know what, I'm gonna try this. And this one had copper in it because it was blue, and I put that in there, and I have not had algae in this pool ever since, and that was probably like two, I'm gonna say it was two years ago.
SPEAKER_03Because I think the last time I'm glad that you mentioned that it was blue because I didn't include this in my notes. But if it's not blue and it claims to be copper, it's not actually copper because copper is always going to be blue.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. So this product I have used in that pool, and then I used it because he gave me a whole bottle of like a big gallon of it. So I used it in a bunch of my pools that needed it, and uh, I haven't had algae, but for this particular one, would I would get it every freaking you know, April, I did not get it. I haven't had it since.
SPEAKER_03Copper is definitely great, but what I wanted to say was it's a good one. I don't know if I say if I say this later on, I don't remember. Well, yes, but that's not what I was gonna say. Say, stay, say staining obviously it was staining is the biggest disadvantage to copper that there is. Um, also uh it's lethal in high doses is another disadvantage. So that's what I was gonna say is that if you do choose to use copper, uh get yourself a copper test kit. Or you can take the water to Leslie's every once in a while and have them test it for you. Or you can just get your own tester. You could, but they're kind of expensive, and if you don't really use copper all that often, you know what I mean? Just a just another option for people out there, not telling you to do that.
SPEAKER_06Well, I didn't have any problems with it. If you follow the dosing instructions, you should be fine.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, uh yes. Obviously, always follow the dosing instructions. However, with copper, it does not leave the water unless you replace the water that doesn't with water that doesn't have copper in it.
SPEAKER_06Well, um, okay, I get that, but I think here in our climate here in Florida, we don't have a problem with replacing water.
SPEAKER_03No, we don't, but other people do, and that's why you gotta say that stuff. So um, but yeah, if you're using any metallic algicides, any heavy metals, you should always test. I said last week that I wasn't sure if there were silver test kits because we're about to talk about silver next. There are silver test kits. There's apparently there's a test for anything that we add to a pool. It just might not be a pool manufacturer's test kit. Like, so if you want to test nitrates or nitrites, you go to a fish store, an aquarium, and you buy the test strips there because they they won't have a Met SCP. So anyway, on to silver, unless you had anything else that you want to add about copper? No. It works great. I have used it sever m very much often several times. I've used both of the other two things that we've talked about. And yeah, so just examples of silver with it. And what does it look like? It's not magical and pretty at all. With copper, like the blue is a cool color. Also, don't get copper algecide in your eye. I've gotten it in my eye before. I thought my eyeball disintegrated. So for that reason, I keep an eye wash kit in my eye. Just because of that one experience. You keep an eye kit.
SPEAKER_05What? You what? I keep an eye wash kit, an eyeball washing kit. You said in my eye. In my truck. I keep in my eye. Oh my god. Oops. Okay. You should keep it in there anyways, not your eye, but in your truck, because you can splash chloride and stuff in your eye, too. But you also burned.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, copper algezide in the eye sucks. So anyway, okay, so let's move on to officially to silver. Uh so same thing as with copper, except that it only comes in liquid that I know of. It does not come in c in um a powder or yeah, it it's not dry, it's only in a liquid. And so far, the only brand that I've had experience with, I'm not saying there aren't other brands. I have used the Silver Algodyne is the brand, and um you can find them very easily on TikTok if that's your thing. I I think that unless you contact them and order it from them directly, in Florida, you are not gonna be able to find it. Okay. It's gonna be hard to get. Yeah. Well, I and that by the I I mean they're not gonna have it at distribution. So, like there I don't think SCP is gonna have it. Horner for sure won't have it, Gorner Gor Gorner, Gorman probably won't have it. Um, but if you contact the company directly, they'll send it to you. And also they they're they're very cool with sending out um s samples. So, how does that one work? Do you have to use it with the copper? You do not have to use it with the copper, no. So uh they sent me a sample to try, and I did my best to follow the directions as best as I could. So I took my my time and I went two days to the pool in a row. So with the silver algodyne, and this is this specific brand. I don't know if the directions are the same for the different brands of silver, just because I I am that unfamiliar with it. So these directions stated to have a clean filter, which duh have no you so you have to brush the algae, obviously, that's in the pool. And then it also said to make sure that there's no algae in the grout lines at the water line. Why? Because then the algae is just gonna like try to fight that and it won't do shit. It won't do stuff about the algae that's actually in the pool under the water. So if you have and also too, I heard from Rudy from last week. Remember, I was like, I don't know if the water if the stuff above the water line is black algae or if that's it's black algae, it's moist enough for it to be the same thing. It is black algae, it's just in the grout above the water line. Or just algae. It's not necessarily black algae, right? No, well, Rudy said it's black algae. So I mean it's probably a combination because that like I said before, green algae, mustard algae can live in the biofilm of black algae. So it just all depends, you know, it's it's probably all of it, to be honest. So anyway, the silver algadyne directions said to make sure that there's not any algae up in the grout lines above the water line. So they want you to take all that away. Um, and then you're supposed to brush the whole pool, you know, as as you're supposed to with any type of algecide, and then you have to adjust the chemistry to a s to certain parameters. It wasn't crazy, it was like low chlorine level, and then actually, no, the chlorine level didn't matter. That was one of the things that surprised me. Chlorine level didn't matter, but I had to have like the pH and you know stuff a certain level, which wasn't hard to get to. And then the hard part about it, which is what I think that I did wrong, because as I said, um the literally the next week is when that crap with the property manager happened, and so I got switched off of that route. And I never got to see it personally, right? So I asked the dude who was doing the route after me, and he's like, Yeah, it still has some black algae in it. So I don't know the extent. Like, I don't I wasn't able to go back, so I don't know, I I don't know what the before and after looked like, so I don't know if you know it still had just a little bit, I don't know if it was better. I I really have no idea. So according to him, it still had black algae in it, and so in my mind, I must have done something slightly wrong. I feel like I I dosed it too fast because you're supposed to pour it through the skimmer at a uh at and there's a rate that it tells you I can't remember off the top of my head now the numbers, but you're supposed to pour it like really, really, really, really, really, really, really slowly. And I didn't pour it that slowly. I did it as slowly as I could, but anyway, so that's that was my experience.
SPEAKER_06Okay, here's a question. So, okay, because I thought about this uh a couple weeks ago. So it's when you when it tells you to adjust the pH level to 7.4, just say you're to 7.8, what do you if I dump in a bunch of acid to get that pH down, it's not gonna change it immediately. I mean, doesn't it take a little bit?
SPEAKER_07No, it's gonna filter for a little bit.
SPEAKER_06It's got a like a helper. Oh well, I don't got time for that.
SPEAKER_03Well, that's why you d do it one day and you go back the next day to dose it to add the actual chemical. So you adjust everything, go back, add it. Oh is that what you do? Really? Well, when it's like imperative that I adjust the chemistry before I add something, yes. So like for Jack's the stain ID kits, I'll usually do that. I'll drop the pH the day before and then go back the next day. Although with the Jack's stain ID kits, you can kind of cheat and just like dump in acid where you're gonna test. Not like a ton. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe that's for another show. Or we should have added that to the metal episode. All right, let's move on to sodium bromide. Ready? Okay, ready to go. So sodium bromide, name name all of the name all of the brand names. Ready to go. Sodium bromide. Mm-hmm. Name all of the brand names that sodium bromide is listed under.
SPEAKER_06All right, hold on. Let me see. I'll give you a hint. They all have the word yellow in them.
SPEAKER_03Yellow treat, yellow out, yellow eliminator, yellow stop yellow, yellow be gone, bitch ass yellow shit, yellow snow. Just keep it. I was just gonna say yellow snow.
SPEAKER_06I was gonna say that.
SPEAKER_03None of that's real. Um, ammonium sulfate, which I just showed you right here. It's green to clean in this jar, but it is also called yellow out in another jar. Oh, really? It's the same thing as yeah. It's the same exact thing. This is why we need to read our ingredient list, people.
SPEAKER_04So you can use as yes, that's why I said that. I have a whole bunch of that stuff that I was given at a pool show, and it's just sitting in my shot.
SPEAKER_06Oh, Lordy, I'm gonna have to use I'm shipping that in my pool tree.
SPEAKER_03I'm telling you. You do have to follow the directions on this one, though. You can't just it's not the same as sodium bromide. This is different. We'll talk about this in a second, okay? I know that one. I've tried that one before. Right. So, sodium bromide is pretty much like bromine. It's a salt of bromine. It's a salt, brother. It's not, you know, the same thing, but it's in it's kind of the same thing. I'm just trying to be like simple for the simpletons that are just kidding. You guys are great. Oh my god. Well, I mean, you know, it was not. I'm just trying to make things easy to understand for everybody because I don't understand uh the chemical names I'm saying. I just know how to say the letters in the sentence. Like it doesn't I do. This we're getting very chaotic here. So anyway, as we discussed in the CYA episode, the cyanuric app uh cyanuric acid episode, when sodium bromide is used, the bromide is oxidized by chlorine to hypobromous acid. So the chlorine is being converted to bromine. The presence of bromide cancels out cyanuric acid's ability to protect chlorine from being broken down by sunlight. So essentially you are bypassing the CYA, but in the process, this will convert HOCL to HOBR. So it'll convert hypochlorous acid to hypobromic acid. And there is no stabilizer for hypobromous acid, and so it will just evaporate pretty much immediately. So if you have a pool, if that's why you have to add that's why you have to add extra chlorine when you add sodium.
SPEAKER_06Oh, so okay, so it bypasses it or does it get rid of the um cyanuric acid? Bypasses. So if I have a pool with a high cyanuric acid, well, high for the health department, if I put bromine in there, that's not gonna get rid of the cyanuric acid. No, it's gonna bypass it. Okay.
SPEAKER_03It's going to kill the algae, but it's going to work better because it's not bonded with the stabilizer like the like the chlorine is. Okay. So it's basically, you know, just going around it. But it's gonna it's gonna convert any of the chlorine that you have into bromine, and then it's going to be burned off by the sun because now it's not bonded with the stabilizer anymore. Right, gotcha. I knew that part. Okay. Right. So you'll you'll have your stabilizer is gonna stay the same, but now you're not gonna have any more free chlorine. I was trying to figure out how to get the stabilizer down.
SPEAKER_06Drinking water to drain it. Or even water. Oh wait, as in wait, I heard that there's a new product out that gets rid of stabilizer. Am I crazy? Did I hear this somewhere?
SPEAKER_03Well, we talked about it a little bit in the cyanuric acid episode. Okay. Um, and there's bio there's acid, there's CYA removers, uh, but you have to be very specific with the chemistry, and I've never heard of them working. Oh, okay. But you can use alum and that gets rid of it. But then you have to but then you have to vacuum to waste. Okay. When why am I talking about we just got done with uh no no no because I put them all in one paragraph and I got so silly with the calling what the sodium bromide names, I I didn't realize. So this paragraph was sodium bromide, uh ammonium sulfate, and sodium tetraborate. So we just talked about sodium bromide. Now, when ammonium sulfate is used, that's this, this is ammonium sulfate. When this is used, a pH of 8.0 is required. And then after the algae have been after the algae have been killed, superchlorination is required to remove the ammonia from the water. I knew that. Because what happens when chlorine combines with ammonia? You get what? Combined chlorine.
SPEAKER_06Okay, so I did not know that the pH had to be an 8.0. So what do you do to get an 8.0? Just put a whole bunch of bicarbon there? Okay. That's why that stuff doesn't work for me.
SPEAKER_03It says, right, in my mind, adjust chemical balance to greater than 7.8, alkalinity to 80 to 120, cyaneric acids 25 to 75, and chlorine 2 to 2.5 ppm. Then you come back and you it tells you to add like four pounds of cal hypo or two pounds, what is not just regular chlorine. It says two pounds of powdered chlorine or equal per 15,000 gallons. So you'd probably add like four jugs, four two and a half gallon jugs of chlorine. Yes, I've used it before and I didn't know. I'm sorry, not four, just two, just five gallons, not ten gallons.
SPEAKER_06I didn't have to I didn't know about the pH being so high. I did know. That it ate up all the chloride in my pool the next day when I went, I was like, Oh, there's no chlorine in here. What the heck? Because it's and it was not, it didn't like really work that well, but that's why. Now I know why.
SPEAKER_03Okay. That's why. So now that you know how to use it, you can use the four cases of it that you have.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Now and I was gonna I had just got a new account, green to clean, and I put that in my truck because I had one. I stuck it's still in my truck because I'm like, I'm just gonna add extra chlorine to this. I just added extra chlorine, lots of acid, and that pool was it did take a while to clear, but it's because the pool was really bad.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. So um, there you go. That's how you use that stuff. And also, too, you if you have if your bottles say green to clean, you can use it on mustard algae. You do not have to only just use it on green algae.
SPEAKER_06So you could just use it like how, just do it that way, like make your pH high. Okay. And not use the whole thing that.
SPEAKER_03Well, it tells you how much to use on the label. Okay. I thought I I put it in the whole. Two pounds, add two pounds of green to clean per 15,000 gallons of water.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_03And this is one of these is two pounds. So one is for 15,000 gallons. Okay. That's what I did.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_03But you can use it on mustard algae. You don't have to only just use it. I don't know if it will work on black algae. I'm not real sure on that. I don't think it will. I don't think so. I don't think it will. Um, okay, so then the third thing was sodium tetraborate, which I am not familiar with. I have never used. I don't know if it is similar to borates or uh boric acid. I don't I feel like it probably is because the words sound the same. Yeah. Some products recommend that a source of boron, like sodium tetraborite borate, be added to achieve 30 parts per million of boron to inhibit algae growth in the water. And then so borat borats, oh my god. No, I did not. Borates are an algist, not an alga side. So this means that borates will not kill algae, but it helps prevent algae growth. Yes. And this is because yes, this is because of scientific reasons that you can read about in super detailed um glory in Rudy's book. It is way too much for me to explain. It has something to do with, I believe, starving the algae of one of the nutrients that it needs. I might be confusing, I might be wrong.
SPEAKER_06I thought that it uh let's see. I thought that it added um borates add uh what do they add to the water? Umates.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I mean it's like it has to do with like ions and charges and all that kind of stuff, which is why I feel like we should just move on from that.
SPEAKER_06Um but it makes you have a really high pH. Just saying. Yes, it does. But it works really well. And it gets really cool bubbles when you splash the water, it's like really cool little bubbles that happen. It's really cool. Interesting. My customers begged me to put it in because they liked the bubbles that it made. They used to pay me to put it in their pool.
SPEAKER_03Okay, well, with borates, you do have to be careful that you don't exceed 50 parts per million. Okay, right.
SPEAKER_06You do have to test for it.
SPEAKER_03Yes. And there are tests for it. Yes. Um, yes, so borates, the level is fifty parts per million is the max, and that is because supposedly, and I I don't mean that to like throw shade, I just meant that I haven't like read the studies or anything, but I think it's been uh shown to cause cancer or like cancer in dogs, or it's bad for dogs if they drink the water with borates in the water. Does it make more oxygen in the water? And that's why it inhibits algae? It ha it's something like that. I don't I I feel like it starves the water of nitrogen, maybe. I that's probably wrong. Don't I mean if you don't tell me I'm wrong?
SPEAKER_06Don't tell me I'm well you tell me I don't mind wrong because I don't know question.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't care. So yeah, I don't know. It has something to do with the fact that it I feel like a basic explanation would be that it I said earlier there's always nutrients that algae needs in the water, it's carbon, it's you know, all those things, which I forgot. Uh, but I feel like borates removes one of those things, is the way that I understood it from what Rudy explained to me.
SPEAKER_06Um you can also use it in your laundry and it makes your laundry go.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I use super washing soda and borax in my laundry. That's how you make laundry soap. You could make your own. Oh well, I also use my own. I also use that in addition to detergent. If you forget about your clothes in the washing machine for like a day and they stink, put super washing soda and borax and you don't even need soap. You could just run a rinse cycle or a wash cycle with those two things, and it will get rid of the smell. But yes, I love super washing soda, which is soda ash, it's sodium carbonate, not bicarb. Right.
SPEAKER_06And put those two ingredients and whatever um soap, and you could make your own laundry soap.
SPEAKER_03You watch those laundry stripping videos on TikTok, that's what they use.
SPEAKER_06No, but I have made my own laundry soap before.
SPEAKER_03No, not laundry soap, it's the stripping stuff. I don't know. It's about to make my own dry cleaning stuff though. Flock and alum, they are not an 80s band. They're a lawyer's oh there you go. They will cause everything to drop to the floor so it can be vacuumed out. Now, not all flocks are alum? Wait, not all flock, I don't know, some some not all flock is the same ingredient, basically. Okay. Flocks all have some type of aluminum in them. Alum, when you just hear me say, oh, alum will do it, I'm referring to aluminum sulfate. So if you look at the ingredients of different flocks, it'll have some variation of aluminum in them. Those will drop everything to the floor, much the same way that lanthanum chloride drops stuff, phosphates and other things, it's not only phosphates it drops, but it all c it all goes falling down to the floor, and then you have to vacuum to waste. So if you're not available, like if you don't have the capability for that, if you don't have a separate pump, if you don't have a skimmer line for some reason, uh that's not gonna work for you. Also with Alum specifically, I don't know with flock because I've I've only used I've used Alum once. I've I'm not really familiar with using flocks. I know with Alum you have to remove any filter media. So if you have a cartridge filter, you have to take the cartridge out. And if you have a DE or a sand filter, you have to put it and recirculate. I don't know if that's the same with flocks in general. Like there's a product called Revive that is a flock. I've never used it. I don't know what the directions are. I don't know what the process is. I don't know either. I just know that it causes things to fall out of it, just drops it all out and then you vacuum it to waste and you circulate it.
SPEAKER_06Did it not get caught into the filter though? You take the filter out. Why? I mean, why wouldn't you want it to get the filter? Well, that's what I'm saying. Okay, so anytime I've ever used a flock, I had to go back the next day to clean the filter. Flock or phosphate remover? They're different. Uh I think I'm not sure. Definitely phosphate remover, but not sure about flock.
SPEAKER_03Flock, I don't like that's what I'm saying. I've used Alum. I've not used I don't think I've ever used a like a flock, like I've never used Revive. Um, I don't think I've I and I don't I can't think of any of the other brand names. So that's what I'm saying is I don't know with those if you bypass the filter or not. I know for a fact with Alum, you bypass the filter or you take the cartridge out because it will clog it, it will mess it all up, and you'll have a bad time. Also, those two things are also pH dependent, and I feel like one needs a high pH and one doesn't, and I get them confused. So before you decide to try any of these products, you know, do a little bit more research. I'm just giving you a basic rundown of information, and we've already been talking for a while, and so that's why I try not to get into too many crazy scientific details, but I also apologize for the vagueness of that bullet point. Anyway, um, so then you want to uh oh, phosphates and nitrates. I was getting ahead of myself. So we talked about phosphates in depth. Algae can digest and store phosphorus or phosphates in their bodies, in their cell structure, even if it is depleted from the water. So if you have algae and you do a phosphate test, you're probably getting a false low phosphate reading, and you are not adding enough phosphate remover. So you want to kill the algae first, you want to get rid of the algae first, and then address and test the phosphates afterwards. So algae can be introduced into a pool from the environment that can already contain phosphates. Um, nitrate sources are similar to those that contain phosphates. So basically, if you're getting phosphates, you may be getting nitrates. Um, there are test kits, as I said earlier. You just probably have to either order them from Amazon or um drinking water testing supply stores. I don't know. Amazon, I would say Amazon. Um, but for for aquarium stores for sure, they have those. Um, in addition, sweat and urine contain nitrogen and nitrates can only be removed by replacing water. So there's no chemical removal of this at all. You just have to replace it. Right. Just like in your fish tank. Yep. And then, real quick, enzymes. Um, not not a removal, not not algae removal uh per se, but it does help. If you add enzymes to any treatment, it enzymes help with phosphate treatments and they help with algae, anything basically, scum lines, lotions, all that stuff. They are made from living cells that are broken apart and they oh, it claim to contain enzymes that react with and degrade contaminants in water. Over time, enzymes lose their three-dimensional structure and can no longer react with the contaminants in the water. Um, and then it says that the enzymes can actually break down and kind of become combined chlorine. Oh, really? No, that it says that there's not enough information, there's like not enough study to know how much it affects the combined chlorine level. So if you're using enzymes, you know, just be mindful of that. If it, you know, I I I've never had an issue, I've never noticed it. Maybe there. Um but also too, I do know that enzymes can be oxidized in high chlorine levels. So don't add enzymes like directly before or after adding liquid chlorine, especially. Like, wait a little while. Um unless you're using natural chemistry or Jack's Magic, those two brands specifically are safe to use. Like they won't get oxidized by the chlorine. Um, and then I think we're closing it up here kind of getting to the end. And then, so real quick, just as this is the prevention method according to the CPO book, you have your brushing, your filtration and circulation. Uh uh, like duh. So you want to just break brush. Brushing breaks up the formation of biofilms and prevents the biofilms from forming. Um, it's gonna help circulate dead spots. If you have, you know, deep corners. Obviously, it's good for the steps and everything. It's just really good to brush. I don't mean to brush constantly, okay. I'm not saying brush every single corner every single day, but you just want to brush regularly. I hate it when people are like, Are you gonna brush today? Yeah, yeah, maybe if I feel like it, but yeah. I usually I usually brush all the time, every time. I mean, br it's actually really satisfying to brush all the time. I don't mean to apply.
SPEAKER_06It's like it is, but it's just it's and you use muscles that other people don't use when you brush. Right?
SPEAKER_03Look at this one. Look at this right here. I know, I'm telling you. Um, okay, so filtration and circulation, as I said, like duh. So clean your baskets. Obviously, you're not gonna have debris floating around, you're not gonna have tannins breaking down, you're not gonna have contaminants and all that stuff. You're not gonna clog your pumps and your baskets. Wait, you're not gonna clog the filter, is what I meant to say. Clean the pumps and baskets so you don't impede the filtration and circulation. And then one thing that I think that people kind of disregard or don't really consider is the scum line. Which, as we were talking about, it will apparently grow black algae above the water line. So this is why brushing is important, it helps prevent it. And then once the scum line starts to form, it can grow by attracting more contaminants because it's sticky and gross, and so stuff floats by and it sticks there, and then it grows and grows and grows, and then algae can live, and also bacteria can live underneath the scum line, especially if it's calcified. And that's what health health departments will shut you down for a scum line. They shut you down or just tag you? Nope, they shut you down if you have a really bad scum line. Also, algae can live under piles of sand and other debris. So if you're not brushing the dead spots and sand piles up, it can start to grow underneath there. And this is why we have residual disinfectant levels. That's why it is so important to have your chemical, chemical controllers and um feeders and stuff like that, especially in uh commercial pools. Yep. Um, all right, you want to wrap it up? How what's your what's your favorite go-to algae removal method? What do you do? What's you walk up to a pool and let's say let's say it's green. Let's just start there. It's it you got green in there. What are you doing? It's not yellow, it's green. Yeah, just green. Like I've neglected the pool.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Like the water. Let's see. All right. If I were gonna go clean my own pool right now, which I need to. I bet you got algae on the steps. I bet you got algae on the light. There might be a little more than that. But anyway, so anybody know a good pool cleaner? Anybody know a good pool cleaner? Because I need to hire somebody. Because it sucks. Um, obviously, so brush the pool. Okay, so if I walk up and the pool's got algae, um, I would brush it for first of all, I would test it, then I would brush it, and then I would well, I would sorry, wait a minute. If I can see through the bottom, I would clean the pool. I would test it, clean the pool like vacuum it, then I would brush it all. And then I would um add whatever was needed. Then you go back the next day. I really don't do that, but then I would go back the next day, clean the filter. But here's the deal. It depends. Like, am I walking up on my own pool so I know when the filter was clean last? Or am I walking up on not my own personally, but like my own that I like an account. Yeah, yeah. Or a brand. Or am I walking up like a brand like last week when I did a green to clean, I had no idea. So at that point I pulled the filter out to see what the filter looked like. Because I had no idea what this pool. But this was so green, I couldn't this pool I couldn't even see at the bottom. It was bad. And then when I started brushing, all this brown stuff just started coming up. It was so gross. I was like, I don't think this thing is gonna clear. I didn't even realize it was that bad. But it did, it cleared in I think it took me two weeks and it cleared it. So nice. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, so that's I mean, yeah, it just all depends on on what you're walking up to. So pretty much I do the same thing you just described. Uh it it it does depend on the pool. Now, if I'm walking up to a pool that I cannot see through and it's green, and uh so if I'm if I'm doing a green ean to clean, like bad green. This one was green ean to clean. I don't do any of what you just said. I don't look at the filter. I don't I just get my bucket of trichlorine. I'm like, you know what? I need a whole ass bucket. I so do I test? I do like to test just so I know what I'm starting with, because you you never really do know. Like I have walked up on the greenest of green pools going, there's no way this is gonna have chlorine and it's a super high pH. Meanwhile, they just added 45 jugs of chlorine and 16 jugs of acid yesterday. You know what I mean? So you never you never know. So you could roll up on something that's totally green and it's got a high ass chlorine level, and you're not gonna need to add chlorine. However, if I cannot see through that pool, I am adding trichlor to it. I don't really care about what the chemical levels are at that point because I can always fix it later. And if the stabilizer is like always really is, or if the stabilizer is already really high, and I'm gonna add a whole bunch more by clearing it up with trichlor, I'm just gonna drain, you know, that at that point I'll drain it and just I don't know. Drain the pool. Not drain it, but like let water out and just kind of deal and and see what where it goes. But normally pools like that won't have a high stabilizer, but just in case. Yeah. So but that's what I do. I don't I'm not I'm not sticking a net, I'm not sticking the brush in blind, I'm not sticking my vacuum in blind. I'm just gonna put trichlor in there, clear it up as best as I can, and then kind of go from there. And then I'll let the trichlor do the work of the filter.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. So this pool that I just did, it took me like a week and a half. So I when I first walked up to it, I could see the water was clear mostly. The sides of the pool and the surface was complete green. So I kind of underestimated how much algae was in there. So I tested it. I added um four. This was a small pool, probably 10,000 gallons, maybe. Maybe 15. I highly doubt it though. Nah, it's more like 10. 10,000 gallon pool. I added uh, I brushed it all. I added, I only had like one scoop of stabilizer. I threw that in the bottom of the pool. I added four jugs of chlorine. See, I don't ever add stabilizer because I know I'm gonna just use trichlor. Yeah, I didn't have any trichlor on me. So I added the stabilizer and then I added acid, like probably about a three-quarters of a jug of acid. And then that was all I added. Actually, I put a little tablet in the skimmer because I'm like, at this point, it's not gonna matter. Because tablets in the skimmer are bad, but one time it's not gonna hurt anything. I brushed it all. The next day the homeowner calls me and I am he was asking me questions. I go, he goes, Wow, it's looking really good. I'm like, What? Can you send me a picture? And he sends me a picture and all the green was gone. I didn't even miss a spot when I was brushing early because there was no streaks in it, no nothing. It was just cloudy. It was cloudy, that was it. And then it took a couple more days for the cloudiness to go away. And then I used then I could see kind of like some streaks after that. But um, anyway, so it took like a week and a half and it was all clear.
SPEAKER_03So sometimes they take that long to clear, and then you know, other times it doesn't. So I've got them a new cartridge too.
